Group classes
Yeshe did not grow up in Spain or come from a Flamenco family. As a Flamenco teacher this is an advantage because he knows what is needed to learn this art from the beginning as an adult. Through formal training in Classical, Jazz and Flamenco and years of experience teaching, Yeshe articulates the essential aspects of Flamenco that remain mysterious with many Spanish teachers.
Singing: Guajiras (All Levels)
September 16 - December 16
Tuesdays 7:30pm - 8:30pm PST (In-person and Zoom)
In this class we will learn to sing this pretty and playful style of flamenco that is often called a "Cante de ida y vuelta", meaning that it is a flamenco style that is highly influenced by Central American music from the Spanish colonial times (in this case specifically Cuba). This style is in the major key with a 12 count flamenco rhythm with romantic lyrics often describing the beauty of being in Cuba. Commonly danced as a solo with a fan, we would learn the salida, 2 letras and a bulerías that are typically sung for guajiras baile. The Mon & Wed intermediate dance and Wed Beg/Int guitar class will also be studying this form so there will be opportunity for collaboration. Guajiras is a less challenging style of flamenco melodically and rhythmically to learn and this class is open to all levels.
Guitar: Soleá for Baile (Intermediate)
September 16 - December 16
Tuesdays 6:15pm - 7:15pm PST (In-person and Zoom)
In this class we will learn the essentials of accompanying the dance of one of the most dramatic and beautiful styles of flamenco: Soleá. Translating to English as “solitude”, Soleá is a deeply expressive style in a slow 12 count rhythm. When danced, it is often at a much slower tempo than as a guitar or singing solo. At this slower tempo for dance, there is a different rhythmic feel that requires different accompaniment and falsetas. We will learn an intro, marcajes, llamadas, letra accompaniment and a falseta that will give you a foundation for the dynamic feel to accompany this beautiful dance style. In the latter part of the class we will have the opportunity to practice what we are learning with dancers.
